substance-induced mood disorder treatment for adults and adolescents

When mood symptoms are tied to alcohol, drugs, or certain medications, it feels confusing and overwhelming—especially when life, relationships, or school and work are already strained. At Galen Hope, we meet you or your loved one with clarity, warmth, and a solid plan. Our substance-induced mood disorder treatment helps teens and adults stabilize, understand what’s happening, and build sustainable recovery through compassionate, individualized care.

what is substance-induced mood disorder?

“Substance-induced mood disorder” is an umbrella term for significant depressive or bipolar-type symptoms that arise during intoxication, during withdrawal, or soon after starting or stopping a medication or substance. Symptoms are driven by the substance’s effects on the brain—rather than by a primary mood disorder—and often improve as the body clears the substance and recovery begins. Careful assessment considers timing, type of substance, medical factors, and if symptoms persist beyond the expected window.

Substances that may trigger mood changes include alcohol, stimulants (e.g., cocaine or amphetamines), sedatives and anxiolytics (e.g., benzodiazepines), opioids, and certain prescribed medications (for example, in rare cases corticosteroids or antidepressants can precipitate mania in vulnerable individuals). Because substance use and mental health commonly intersect, treatment should address both.

our approach to substance-induced mood disorder treatment

Galen Hope provides an integrated, relationship-centered model designed for real-world healing. We begin with a thorough psychiatric and medical evaluation, collaborate on an individualized treatment plan, and deliver the appropriate level of care with community integration, so skills translate into daily life. Our multidisciplinary team supports mood stabilization, safe substance use reduction/cessation, and relapse prevention while engaging families and care partners throughout treatment.

Our programs are built for teens and adults who need more than once-weekly therapy but less than 24/7 inpatient hospitalization. With two locations in Southeast Florida, we blend clinical excellence with an affirming environment where each person is seen as a whole human being—not simply a diagnosis.

We create a sense of community inside our doors, where we facilitate a commitment to recovery. We find tremendous meaning in bringing someone into our circle and helping them recognize the importance they play in it. It is through these relationships that healing takes place and clients begin to develop the skills to live both independently and in relation to others.

how do i know if i have a substance-induced mood disorder?

Clues include mood symptoms that begin during intoxication, withdrawal, or shortly after starting or stopping a medication—and improve as the substance clears. A clinician will examine the timing, your history, and whether symptoms persist beyond expected windows to distinguish substance-induced symptoms from a primary mood disorder. If you’re unsure, a professional evaluation is the best next step.

which substances are most likely to trigger mood changes?

Alcohol, stimulants, sedatives, benzodiazepines, and opioids are common culprits. Some prescribed medications and antidepressants can cause mood shifts in susceptible people. A careful review of all substances and medications (including time and dose) is essential for safe care.

what are the symptoms of substance-induced mood disorder?

Symptoms mirror depressive or bipolar-type presentations: low mood, hopelessness, loss of interest, sleep or appetite changes, elevated mood, irritability, decreased need for sleep, racing thoughts, and risky behavior. The hallmark is the link to substance use or withdrawal rather than a longstanding pattern independent of substances.

can therapy help with substance-induced mood disorder?

Yes. Evidence-based therapies help stabilize mood, increase coping skills, address triggers, and support healthy routines as the nervous system recalibrates. Because mental health and substance use influence each other, integrated treatment offers better outcomes than addressing either one alone.

are medications helpful for substance-induced mood disorder?

Medications may be used short-term to target specific symptoms (e.g., sleep, anxiety, or intense mood swings) while the body clears substances and to treat co-occurring conditions when appropriate. The goal is the least intrusive, most effective plan—combined with therapy, medical care, and recovery supports. Your prescriber will consider safety, timing, and possible interactions with ongoing substance use.

what’s the difference between an inpatient vs outpatient treatment center?

Inpatient (or residential/hospital) treatment provides 24/7 care for acute medical or psychiatric risk. Outpatient programs—like PHP (8-12 hours/day) and IOP (3-4 hours/day)—offer intensive, structured care while you live at home or in supported housing, which is ideal once medical risk is stabilized. Galen Hope specializes in PHP and IOP with community integration for adolescents and adults.

how can I help a friend or family member with substance-induced mood disorder?

Lead with empathy and safety: avoid judgment, encourage professional care, and help reduce access to substances that trigger symptoms. Offer practical support so they can attend treatment, and consider family education or therapy to strengthen the recovery environment. Consistency and calm connection are powerful.

does galen hope take insurance?

Yes. Galen Hope accepts insurance for mental health and eating disorder treatment. We are in-network with ComPsych, Claritev (formerly called Multiplan), Aetna, First Health, and Optum/UnitedHealthcare plans. We also work with many out-of-network insurance providers and offer benefit verification to help you understand your options.

What insurance plans does Galen Hope accept for eating disorder and mental health treatment?

In-Network: Galen Hope is currently in-network with ComPsych, Multiplan, Aetna, First Health, and Optum/UnitedHealthcare plans. Through our Optum contract, we may also be able to work with commercial plans such as UHC, AvMed, and Oscar.

Out-of-Network: We also support many clients through out-of-network benefits with providers like Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), Cigna, Evernorth, and others. To determine how your specific plan may apply to treatment, please contact us for a complimentary insurance verification.

Can I use out-of-network insurance to pay for treatment at Galen Hope?

In some instances, we can accept out-of-network (OON) as full payment while in others, we provide a scaled partial payment. This may also be connected with your out or pocket max, as well as co-pays and co-insurance. The degree to which out of network benefits cover the full cost of treatment varies greatly from policy to policy. In some instances it can serve as full payment, while others may cover a portion. In all cases, individuals using out of network benefits will be subject to paying their out-of-network deductible and other fees such as the out of pocket max, co-insurance or co-pays as dictated by your insurance policy.

Does Galen Hope help verify insurance benefits for treatment?

Absolutely. We offer free insurance benefit verification to help you understand what your policy may cover before you begin treatment. We aim to provide full transparency around coverage and any potential out-of-pocket costs.

Can I get a Single Case Agreement (SCA) for treatment at Galen Hope?

When clinically indicated and appropriate, we pursue Single Case Agreements (SCAs) to help families access in-network-level coverage with an out-of-network provider. Our team advocates on your behalf and provides clinical documentation to support the request. We encourage you to call us so that we can determine if a SCA is warranted.

What happens if my insurance stops covering treatment early?

If your insurance coverage ends unexpectedly and we believe the denial of care is not in your best clinical interest, our team will work directly with your insurance carrier to appeal the decision. You will receive timely notification of any changes in authorizations for care in order to explore financial options and clinical recommendations to help minimize any disruption in care.

How can I find out what my insurance covers for eating disorder or mental health treatment?

Our admissions team will assess your insurance policy, the recommended level of care, and your treatment location to give you a clear understanding of what your plan is likely to cover. We’ll guide you every step of the way.

Are insurance benefits different depending on where I live?

Yes. Insurance coverage may vary by state and plan type. We consider your plan’s regional requirements when evaluating your benefits.

Will I know my treatment costs before starting at Galen Hope?

Yes. Before admission, we’ll walk you through all anticipated costs, including what insurance is likely to cover and any out-of-pocket expenses, so there are no surprises.

Can Galen Hope help me understand my insurance coverage?

Yes. Our experienced admissions team will break down your policy, explain your mental health or eating disorder benefits, and help you make the most informed decision possible.
