mast cell activation syndrome treatment

mcas treatment at galen hope

Thoughtful, integrated care for Mast Cell Activation Syndrome when it overlaps with eating disorders, trauma, anxiety, and nervous system dysregulation.

Living with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, or MCAS, can be overwhelming, especially when symptoms overlap with eating disorders, trauma, anxiety, nervous system dysregulation or dysfunction, or other complex medical concerns. Individuals living with these conditions shouldn’t have to choose between medical stabilization and psychological healing. Galen Hope provides both.

We take a thoughtful, whole-person approach to care that goes beyond symptom management alone. Our goal is to help clients feel medically and nutritionally supported, emotionally understood, and more stable in both body and mind. Our treatment programs offer a fully integrated model of care where members of the client’s physician-led multidisciplinary team collaborate and coordinate closely.

what is mcas?

Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) is an immunological condition in which mast cells — white blood cells that help regulate immune responses — release excessive amounts of chemical mediators like histamine inappropriately and without a clear trigger. This causes symptoms across multiple body systems, commonly including flushing, hives, abdominal pain, brain fog, fatigue, and in severe cases, anaphylaxis. Because symptoms vary widely and overlap with many other conditions, MCAS is frequently misdiagnosed and can take years to identify.

While there is no cure, MCAS is manageable. Treatment typically involves identifying and avoiding personal triggers, following a low-histamine diet where helpful, and using medications that either stabilize mast cells or block the effects of the chemicals they release. MCAS is commonly associated with other conditions such as POTS and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, and a diagnosis generally requires confirmation from a specialist such as an allergist or immunologist.

why mcas care requires more than symptom management

MCAS causes a wide range of symptoms across multiple parts of the body at the same time. Some possible symptoms are GI distress, food reactivity, dizziness, fatigue, and inflammation. But it is not just a medical diagnosis; it is part of a broader mind-body connection that requires sophisticated, nuanced care, and sometimes coexists with an eating disorder, trauma history, or nervous system dysregulation.

At Galen Hope, we believe that for healing to be more attainable, treatment must go well beyond symptom management or workarounds. We actively treat the whole person, fully and compassionately. That means not only taking the physical symptoms seriously, but also considering the role of emotional stress, trauma, anxiety, and patterns of food restriction or avoidance—and looking carefully at how these things are influencing each other.

galen hope’s approach to mcas

Adults in Program

We use medications thoughtfully.

Medications can be helpful for clients with MCAS, but we are careful not to over-medicate, especially when symptoms may be influenced by stress or trauma. At Galen Hope, we stay mindful around polypharmacy and work to ensure treatment is always clinically grounded, coordinated—and intentional.

Community Group

We support the nervous system.

Emotional stress, anxiety, trauma, and PTSD can all contribute to flare-ups and increase physical reactivity. That is why treatment at Galen Hope includes more than symptom management. We integrate therapy and coping strategies that help support nervous system regulation, reduce reactivity, and create a stronger foundation for healing.

Father and Child

We support proper nutrition while validating discomfort.

When GI symptoms and food sensitivity are present, it can be easy for avoidant and restrictive eating to become entrenched. Our team works carefully to avoid reinforcing these and other eating disorder thoughts and behaviors. The physician, nurse, therapist, and dietitian collaborate closely to keep the client’s nutrition on track while validating discomfort and helping them work through it in a supported, clinically thoughtful way.

Supported Housing

We work as a team.

Clients with complex conditions often receive conflicting guidance from different providers. At Galen Hope, collaboration is essential. All members of the client’s treatment team work together to reduce mixed messages, avoid over-pathologizing, and create greater consistency across care. This helps clients feel more supported and keeps treatment moving forward in a clearer, steadier direction.

what makes galen hope unique?

At Galen Hope, we’ve created a warm, intimate therapeutic community inside our doors where clients can feel physically, psychologically, and emotionally safe. Our treatment model is rooted in both highly individualized, trauma-aware care and services that are designed to create connection among all those who attend and work here.

We use a non-punitive, weight-inclusive approach and support clients through carefully managed exposures to foods, environments, medical interventions, and other challenges that may have become difficult or distressing. Every part of care is designed to help clients build greater tolerance, confidence, and capacity over time.

comprehensive, integrated care for complex presentations

Our clinicians are specifically trained and experienced in proven methods and strategies for working with individuals whose medical and emotional complexity others may struggle to treat. At Galen Hope, clients receive comprehensive, integrated care that includes medical, psychiatric, and precise nutrition support; trauma-informed psychotherapy; personalized exposures; and reintegration planning. They retain the same treatment team throughout their stay for continuity as they progress through our step-down programs. For clients living with MCAS and overlapping eating disorder or trauma-related symptoms, this kind of support can make a real difference.

If you or a loved one is struggling with MCAS alongside eating disorder symptoms, trauma, anxiety, or nervous system dysregulation, Galen Hope may be able to help. Contact our team to learn more about our treatment approach and whether our program is the right fit.

Community Group

what is mcas?

MCAS stands for Mast Cell Activation Syndrome. It is a condition that can cause a person’s body to react strongly to things like foods, stress, heat, scents, medications, or environmental changes. Symptoms can look different for everyone and may include stomach pain, nausea, flushing, itching, headaches, dizziness, fast heart rate, trouble breathing, or feeling overwhelmed by physical discomfort.

can galen hope diagnose or treat mcas on its own

Galen Hope does not replace the care of an allergist, immunologist, primary care doctor, or other medical specialist. We help support people who are living with MCAS while also struggling with eating disorder symptoms, anxiety, trauma, PTSD, or fear around food and physical symptoms. When needed, we work with outside providers so everyone is on the same page.

are mcas symptoms caused by anxiety?

No. MCAS symptoms are real and should be taken seriously. At the same time, stress, anxiety, trauma, and PTSD can make the nervous system more reactive and may worsen symptoms for some people. Supporting the nervous system does not mean we think symptoms are “all in your head.” It means we are treating the whole person.

can galen hope help if mcas makes eating difficult?

Yes. Stomach pain, nausea, food reactions, and fear of symptoms can make eating feel scary or overwhelming. Over time, this can lead to avoiding foods, skipping meals, or becoming very restricted around eating. Our medical, nursing, therapy, and nutrition teams work together to support nutrition while also validating that eating may feel difficult. We help clients build more confidence around food without dismissing their discomfort.

what can trigger mcas symptoms?

Triggers can be different for everyone. Some people notice symptoms after certain foods, medications, changes in temperature, exercise, alcohol, stress, strong scents, or environmental exposures. Keeping track of symptoms and possible triggers can be helpful, but it is important to work with a qualified medical provider before making major changes to your diet, medications, or daily routine.

will I be forced to eat foods that feel unsafe?

No. Our approach is individualized and non-punitive. We take time to understand each client’s symptoms, medical needs, nutrition needs, and food fears. When food exposures are appropriate, they are introduced slowly and with support. The goal is to help clients feel safer, more flexible, and more confident over time.

how does galen hope approach medication?

Medication can be helpful for some people with MCAS. Our team looks carefully at each client’s medications to make sure treatment is thoughtful, medically appropriate, and not overwhelming. We also work with outside doctors when needed to help avoid mixed messages or unnecessary medication changes.

can someone receive treatment for mcas and an eating disorder at the same time?

Yes. Galen Hope supports people with complex needs, including MCAS alongside eating disorder symptoms, anxiety, trauma, PTSD, or other mental health concerns. Before admission, our team reviews each person’s needs to make sure our program is the right fit.

does galen hope take insurance?

Yes. Galen Hope accepts insurance for mental health and eating disorder treatment. We are in-network with ComPsych, Claritev (formerly called Multiplan), Aetna, First Health, and Optum/UnitedHealthcare plans. We also work with many out-of-network insurance providers and offer benefit verification to help you understand your options.

What insurance plans does Galen Hope accept for eating disorder and mental health treatment?

In-Network: Galen Hope is currently in-network with ComPsych, Multiplan, Aetna, First Health, and Optum/UnitedHealthcare plans. Through our Optum contract, we may also be able to work with commercial plans such as UHC, AvMed, and Oscar.

Out-of-Network: We also support many clients through out-of-network benefits with providers like Carelon Insurance, Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), Cigna, Evernorth, and others. To determine how your specific plan may apply to treatment, please contact us for a complimentary insurance verification.

Can I use out-of-network insurance to pay for treatment at Galen Hope?

In some instances, we can accept out-of-network (OON) as full payment while in others, we provide a scaled partial payment. This may also be connected with your out or pocket max, as well as co-pays and co-insurance. The degree to which out of network benefits cover the full cost of treatment varies greatly from policy to policy. In some instances it can serve as full payment, while others may cover a portion. In all cases, individuals using out of network benefits will be subject to paying their out-of-network deductible and other fees such as the out of pocket max, co-insurance or co-pays as dictated by your insurance policy.

Does Galen Hope help verify insurance benefits for treatment?

Absolutely. We offer free insurance benefit verification to help you understand what your policy may cover before you begin treatment. We aim to provide full transparency around coverage and any potential out-of-pocket costs.

Can I get a Single Case Agreement (SCA) for treatment at Galen Hope?

When clinically indicated and appropriate, we pursue Single Case Agreements (SCAs) to help families access in-network-level coverage with an out-of-network provider. Our team advocates on your behalf and provides clinical documentation to support the request. We encourage you to call us so that we can determine if a SCA is warranted.

What happens if my insurance stops covering treatment early?

If your insurance coverage ends unexpectedly and we believe the denial of care is not in your best clinical interest, our team will work directly with your insurance carrier to appeal the decision. You will receive timely notification of any changes in authorizations for care in order to explore financial options and clinical recommendations to help minimize any disruption in care.

How can I find out what my insurance covers for eating disorder or mental health treatment?

Our admissions team will assess your insurance policy, the recommended level of care, and your treatment location to give you a clear understanding of what your plan is likely to cover. We’ll guide you every step of the way.

Are insurance benefits different depending on where I live?

Yes. Insurance coverage may vary by state and plan type. We consider your plan’s regional requirements when evaluating your benefits.

Will I know my treatment costs before starting at Galen Hope?

Yes. Before admission, we’ll walk you through all anticipated costs, including what insurance is likely to cover and any out-of-pocket expenses, so there are no surprises.

Can Galen Hope help me understand my insurance coverage?

Yes. Our experienced admissions team will break down your policy, explain your mental health or eating disorder benefits, and help you make the most informed decision possible.
