ufed treatment for adults and adolescents
At Galen Hope, we recognize that not everyone struggling with food and body image fits neatly into a specific diagnostic category. Many adolescents and adults experience significant distress and impairment from disordered eating behaviors, even if they don’t meet the exact criteria for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge eating disorder.
For these individuals, the diagnosis of Unspecified Feeding or Eating Disorder (UFED) provides a framework for understanding their challenges and accessing compassionate, evidence-based care. Our team specializes in tailoring treatment to the unique needs of each client, helping them build a healthier, more sustainable relationship with food, body, and self.
what is ufed?
Unspecified Feeding or Eating Disorder (UFED) is a diagnosis used when an individual shows clear symptoms of disordered eating that cause emotional, physical, or social difficulties but do not fully meet the criteria for another eating disorder. This category recognizes that eating concerns exist on a spectrum, and that even without a “classic” diagnosis, the struggles are real and deserve treatment.
People with UFED may engage in restrictive eating, bingeing, purging, compulsive exercise, or other patterns that negatively impact health and quality of life. They may also experience obsessive thoughts about food, weight, or body image that interfere with daily functioning. The
flexibility of this diagnosis ensures that no one falls through the cracks simply because their experience looks different from textbook definitions.
our approach to ufed treatment
At Galen Hope, we know that UFED looks different for everyone, so treatment is never one-size-fits-all. We start by understanding each client’s unique story and then build an individualized plan that addresses both emotional and physical needs.
Our care combines evidence-based therapy, nutritional support, psychiatric care, and experiential approaches. We also address co-occurring issues like anxiety, depression, or trauma, since these often play a role in disordered eating.
Recovery is about more than food, it’s about self-compassion, resilience, and freedom. For adolescents, we involve families and loved ones to strengthen support. At every step, our team meets clients with empathy, expertise, and hope.

how is ufed different from other eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia?
UFED is diagnosed when someone has significant symptoms of disordered eating but does not meet all the criteria for a specific eating disorder such as anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating disorder. For example, a person may restrict food or engage in purging behaviors but not at the frequency or severity required for another diagnosis. The impact on health and quality of life is still very real, and treatment is equally important.
what are the symptoms of ufed?
Symptoms of UFED can vary widely, which is why it falls into this diagnostic category. They may include restrictive eating, bingeing, purging, compulsive exercise, or obsessive thoughts about food and body image. These behaviors cause distress and can interfere with physical health, emotional wellbeing, and daily functioning.
why would someone receive a ufed diagnosis instead of a specific eating disorder diagnosis?
A UFED diagnosis is often used when symptoms are present but don’t align perfectly with the criteria for other eating disorders. This might happen if behaviors occur less frequently or in ways that don’t fit a strict definition. The purpose of the diagnosis is to ensure that people still receive the treatment and support they need, even if their experience doesn’t look “typical.”
is recovery from ufed possible?
Yes, recovery from UFED is absolutely possible. With the right treatment, individuals can reduce harmful behaviors, heal their relationship with food, and develop healthier coping strategies. At Galen Hope, we emphasize individualized care, self-compassion, and long-term skills that support lasting recovery.
what role does nutrition counseling play in ufed treatment?
Nutrition counseling is a vital part of UFED treatment, as it helps clients rebuild trust with food and learn to nourish their bodies without fear or guilt. Registered dietitians provide education, meal support, and practical strategies for balanced eating. This work goes hand-in-hand with therapy, supporting both the physical and emotional aspects of recovery.
what’s the difference between an inpatient vs outpatient treatment center?
Inpatient treatment centers provide 24/7 care in a hospital-like setting, usually for individuals who need medical stabilization or highly structured support. Outpatient centers, on the other hand, allow clients to live at home while attending therapy, groups, and other services at scheduled times.
Galen Hope is not an inpatient facility; we are a unique outpatient treatment center offering comprehensive, community-integrated care for UFED and other eating disorders. Our programs are designed to provide the depth of support clients need while still helping them stay connected to their daily lives and communities.
how can I help a friend or family member with ufed?
Supporting someone with UFED starts with compassion and understanding. Listen without judgment, and let them know you care about their well-being rather than focusing on food or weight. Encourage them to seek professional help, and offer to support them in taking that step, whether that means researching treatment options, going to an appointment with them, or simply being present.
It’s also important to care for yourself in the process. Supporting a loved one through recovery can be challenging, and having your own outlets for support ensures you can show up with patience and steadiness. At Galen Hope, we work with families as well as individuals, because healing is strongest when community and connection are part of the journey.
does galen hope take insurance?
Yes. Galen Hope accepts insurance for mental health and eating disorder treatment. We are in-network with ComPsych, Claritev (formerly called Multiplan), Aetna, and Optum/UnitedHealthcare plans. We also work with many out-of-network insurance providers and offer benefit verification to help you understand your options.
What insurance plans does Galen Hope accept for eating disorder and mental health treatment?
Galen Hope is currently in-network with ComPsych, Multiplan, Aetna, and select Optum/UnitedHealthcare plans. Through our Optum contract, we may also be able to work with commercial plans such as UnitedHealthcare, AvMed, and Oscar. We also support many clients through out-of-network benefits with providers like Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), Cigna, First Health, and others. To determine how your specific plan may apply to treatment, please contact us for a complimentary insurance verification.
Can I use out-of-network insurance to pay for treatment at Galen Hope?
In some instances, we can accept out-of-network (OON) as full payment while in others, we provide a scaled partial payment. This may also be connected with your out or pocket max, as well as co-pays and co-insurance. The degree to which out of network benefits cover the full cost of treatment varies greatly from policy to policy. In some instances it can serve as full payment, while others may cover a portion. In all cases, individuals using out of network benefits will be subject to paying their out-of-network deductible and other fees such as the out of pocket max, co-insurance or co-pays as dictated by your insurance policy.
Does Galen Hope help verify insurance benefits for treatment?
Absolutely. We offer free insurance benefit verification to help you understand what your policy may cover before you begin treatment. We aim to provide full transparency around coverage and any potential out-of-pocket costs.
Can I get a Single Case Agreement (SCA) for treatment at Galen Hope?
When clinically indicated and appropriate, we pursue Single Case Agreements (SCAs) to help families access in-network-level coverage with an out-of-network provider. Our team advocates on your behalf and provides clinical documentation to support the request. We encourage you to call us so that we can determine if a SCA is warranted.
What happens if my insurance stops covering treatment early?
If your insurance coverage ends unexpectedly and we believe the denial of care is not in your best clinical interest, our team will work directly with your insurance carrier to appeal the decision. You will receive timely notification of any changes in authorizations for care in order to explore financial options and clinical recommendations to help minimize any disruption in care.
How can I find out what my insurance covers for eating disorder or mental health treatment?
Our admissions team will assess your insurance policy, the recommended level of care, and your treatment location to give you a clear understanding of what your plan is likely to cover. We’ll guide you every step of the way.
Are insurance benefits different depending on where I live?
Yes. Insurance coverage may vary by state and plan type. We consider your plan’s regional requirements when evaluating your benefits.
Will I know my treatment costs before starting at Galen Hope?
Yes. Before admission, we’ll walk you through all anticipated costs, including what insurance is likely to cover and any out-of-pocket expenses, so there are no surprises.
Can Galen Hope help me understand my insurance coverage?
Yes. Our experienced admissions team will break down your policy, explain your mental health or eating disorder benefits, and help you make the most informed decision possible.
