prolonged grief disorder treatment for adults and adolescents

When grief becomes an all-consuming weight—disrupting daily life, relationships, and purpose—it may evolve into something deeper: Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD). At Galen Hope, we provide compassionate, evidence-based Prolonged Grief Disorder treatment for adults and adolescents who are struggling to move forward after devastating loss. Our trauma-informed approach helps individuals honor their grief while finding the strength to reconnect with life, meaning, and hope.

what is prolonged grief disorder?

Prolonged Grief Disorder is a condition in which intense, persistent grief lasts beyond the expected period of mourning and interferes with a person’s ability to function. Unlike typical grief, which gradually softens with time, PGD remains raw and unrelenting. Individuals may experience deep yearning for the person who has died, preoccupation with memories of the loss, or feelings of emptiness, guilt, or disbelief that seem impossible to overcome.

PGD often develops when a loss is sudden, traumatic, or deeply connected to one’s identity—such as the death of a child, partner, or close friend. It may develop when someone has experienced multiple or complicated losses, or when social support is limited.

Left untreated, prolonged grief leads to isolation, depression, or physical health challenges. At Galen Hope, we understand that grief is not something to simply “get over.” Healing begins when we create space to feel, remember, and slowly rebuild life around the loss, with compassion and guidance every step of the way.

our approach to prolonged grief disorder treatment

Our approach to treating PGD honors the uniqueness of every person’s loss. At Galen Hope, we blend clinical expertise with heartfelt connection, helping clients process their grief in safe and meaningful ways.

We utilize evidence-based therapies such as Complicated Grief Therapy (CGT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and trauma-focused modalities to help clients integrate their loss rather than avoid it. Our clinicians help clients explore emotions, identify stuck points in the grieving process, and rediscover purpose and joy.

We incorporate group support, creative expression, and mindfulness-based practices to help clients reconnect with others and learn to carry their memories with love instead of pain. In our trauma-informed environment, we don’t rush healing; we walk beside each person as they rebuild their life, at their own pace.

how is prolonged grief disorder different from normal grief?

Normal grief gradually lessens over time, allowing space for new experiences and emotional healing. In prolonged grief disorder, the intensity of grief remains high for months or years, and daily functioning becomes impaired. The person may feel “stuck,” unable to imagine life beyond their loss or reconnect with others. PGD is an overwhelming pain that needs care and guidance to resolve.

what are the symptoms of prolonged grief disorder?

Common symptoms include persistent yearning or longing for the deceased, emotional numbness, difficulty accepting the loss, and intense feelings of sadness or guilt. Many people struggle with sleep, appetite changes, or social withdrawal, and they may feel as though a part of themselves has died (making it hard to find motivation or purpose).

how long does grief have to last to be considered prolonged grief disorder?

According to diagnostic guidelines, PGD is typically identified when intense grief persists for 12 months or longer in adults, or 6 months or more in adolescents. However, timing alone doesn’t define the condition; the key factor is the impact on daily life and emotional well-being. When grief becomes paralyzing rather than healing, treatment makes a profound difference.

what therapy works best for prolonged grief disorder?

Complicated Grief Therapy (CGT), a structured approach specifically designed for prolonged grief, is highly effective. CBT and ACT also help individuals process difficult emotions, reframe beliefs, and reconnect with meaningful activities. At Galen Hope, we customize therapy to the individual, combining relational, experiential, and mindfulness-based methods for holistic healing.

are medications used to treat prolonged grief disorder?

While there is no medication that specifically targets grief itself, antidepressants or antianxiety medications may be used to manage co-occurring symptoms such as depression, anxiety, or insomnia. Medications paired with psychotherapy allow clients to feel more emotionally balanced and receptive to treatment.

what’s the difference between an inpatient vs. outpatient treatment center?

Inpatient programs provide 24-hour care and are best for individuals needing immediate stabilization or intensive support. Outpatient or partial-hospitalization programs (like those offered at Galen Hope) allow clients to receive comprehensive therapy and structured care while continuing to engage in daily life. This balance helps clients integrate healing practices in real time and maintain a sense of normalcy throughout treatment.

how can I help a friend or family member with prolonged grief disorder?

Listen without judgment and resist the urge to “fix” their grief or suggest timelines for healing. Offer presence over pressure. Encourage them to seek professional help and remind them that support is not a sign of weakness; it’s an act of courage. Sometimes, the greatest gift you can give is simply walking beside them in compassion and silence.

does galen hope take insurance?

Yes. Galen Hope accepts insurance for mental health and eating disorder treatment. We are in-network with ComPsych, Claritev (formerly called Multiplan), Aetna, First Health, and Optum/UnitedHealthcare plans. We also work with many out-of-network insurance providers and offer benefit verification to help you understand your options.

What insurance plans does Galen Hope accept for eating disorder and mental health treatment?

In-Network: Galen Hope is currently in-network with ComPsych, Multiplan, Aetna, First Health, and Optum/UnitedHealthcare plans. Through our Optum contract, we may also be able to work with commercial plans such as UHC, AvMed, and Oscar.

Out-of-Network: We also support many clients through out-of-network benefits with providers like Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), Cigna, Evernorth, and others. To determine how your specific plan may apply to treatment, please contact us for a complimentary insurance verification.

Can I use out-of-network insurance to pay for treatment at Galen Hope?

In some instances, we can accept out-of-network (OON) as full payment while in others, we provide a scaled partial payment. This may also be connected with your out or pocket max, as well as co-pays and co-insurance. The degree to which out of network benefits cover the full cost of treatment varies greatly from policy to policy. In some instances it can serve as full payment, while others may cover a portion. In all cases, individuals using out of network benefits will be subject to paying their out-of-network deductible and other fees such as the out of pocket max, co-insurance or co-pays as dictated by your insurance policy.

Does Galen Hope help verify insurance benefits for treatment?

Absolutely. We offer free insurance benefit verification to help you understand what your policy may cover before you begin treatment. We aim to provide full transparency around coverage and any potential out-of-pocket costs.

Can I get a Single Case Agreement (SCA) for treatment at Galen Hope?

When clinically indicated and appropriate, we pursue Single Case Agreements (SCAs) to help families access in-network-level coverage with an out-of-network provider. Our team advocates on your behalf and provides clinical documentation to support the request. We encourage you to call us so that we can determine if a SCA is warranted.

What happens if my insurance stops covering treatment early?

If your insurance coverage ends unexpectedly and we believe the denial of care is not in your best clinical interest, our team will work directly with your insurance carrier to appeal the decision. You will receive timely notification of any changes in authorizations for care in order to explore financial options and clinical recommendations to help minimize any disruption in care.

How can I find out what my insurance covers for eating disorder or mental health treatment?

Our admissions team will assess your insurance policy, the recommended level of care, and your treatment location to give you a clear understanding of what your plan is likely to cover. We’ll guide you every step of the way.

Are insurance benefits different depending on where I live?

Yes. Insurance coverage may vary by state and plan type. We consider your plan’s regional requirements when evaluating your benefits.

Will I know my treatment costs before starting at Galen Hope?

Yes. Before admission, we’ll walk you through all anticipated costs, including what insurance is likely to cover and any out-of-pocket expenses, so there are no surprises.

Can Galen Hope help me understand my insurance coverage?

Yes. Our experienced admissions team will break down your policy, explain your mental health or eating disorder benefits, and help you make the most informed decision possible.
