seasonal affective disorder treatment for adults and adolescents
For many people, seasonal changes bring more than cooler weather or shorter days—they bring an emotional shift that affects energy, motivation, sleep, and overall well-being. At Galen Hope, we understand how debilitating Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) feels, especially when it negatively impacts daily routines and relationships. We provide compassionate, evidence-based care for adults and adolescents so they can find stability, reconnect with themselves, and feel like life is moving forward again.
what is seasonal affective disorder?
Seasonal Affective Disorder is a form of depression that follows a seasonal pattern, most commonly appearing during the fall and winter months, when daylight hours shorten. SAD is more than feeling the “winter blues”; it causes significant emotional, physical, and cognitive symptoms that interfere with daily functioning.
People experience low mood, increased sleep, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, social withdrawal, and changes in appetite (especially carbohydrate cravings). While SAD typically appears during winter months, some individuals experience it in spring or summer. The condition is influenced by changes in sunlight, circadian rhythm disruption, serotonin levels, and environmental stress. The most important thing to know is that SAD is treatable, and meaningful relief is possible.
our approach to seasonal affective disorder treatment
At Galen Hope, our staff takes a holistic and personalized approach to SAD treatment. We begin by understanding how seasonal patterns affect each person’s emotions, energy, sleep cycles, and daily life. Rather than using a one-size-fits-all model, we integrate therapeutic techniques that address the mind, body, and environment.
Our clinicians use evidence-based therapies and trauma-informed care, paired with tools like light therapy, sleep regulation support, somatic practices, and lifestyle interventions. We also explore relational stress and environmental triggers that may intensify seasonal depression.
Our Florida locations offer warmth, community, and structure—three elements that help clients feel supported rather than isolated during their most vulnerable seasons. Healing is not just about managing symptoms but developing resilience and inner stability that lasts year-round.

what are the symptoms of seasonal affective disorder?
Common symptoms include low mood, loss of interest in activities, fatigue, excessive sleep, difficulty concentrating, low motivation, and social withdrawal. People may also experience heaviness in the body, appetite changes, increased irritability, or hopelessness. Symptoms tend to follow a seasonal pattern each year.
when does seasonal affective disorder usually occur?
Most individuals experience symptoms during the fall and winter months when sunlight decreases. However, some people develop SAD in the spring or summer, though this is less common. Symptoms typically begin and end around the same time each year. If these patterns repeat for multiple seasons, SAD is probably the cause.
how does Seasonal Affective Disorder affect daily life?
SAD interferes with work, school, relationships, and self-care. Everyday tasks feel overwhelming due to fatigue and reduced motivation. People may withdraw from social activities or struggle with concentration and productivity. Without treatment, symptoms may worsen year after year.
can therapy help with seasonal affective disorder?
Yes. Therapy is one of the most effective treatments for SAD because it helps clients understand seasonal triggers, develop coping strategies, challenge negative thinking, and build healthy routines. Therapy also provides support during periods when motivation and energy are especially low.
are there medications for seasonal affective disorder?
Medications such as antidepressants may be helpful, especially if symptoms are moderate to severe or co-occur with other conditions. Medications are often prescribed alongside therapy and lifestyle interventions. A clinician can help determine whether medication is appropriate based on your unique symptoms and history.
what’s the difference between an inpatient vs. outpatient treatment center?
Inpatient treatment provides 24/7 residential care for individuals needing intensive stabilization. Outpatient treatment offers structured support while clients continue living at home or in supported community housing. Galen Hope is a comprehensive outpatient treatment center, providing high-touch, integrative care without requiring overnight stays.
how can I help a friend or family member with Seasonal Affective Disorder?
Offer compassion and patience, especially when their energy or mood shifts. Encourage them to seek professional support, help them maintain healthy routines, and validate their experience rather than dismissing it as “just seasonal.” Small gestures like checking in, spending time together, or helping them access treatment can make a meaningful difference.
does galen hope take insurance?
Yes. Galen Hope accepts insurance for mental health and eating disorder treatment. We are in-network with ComPsych, Claritev (formerly called Multiplan), Aetna, First Health, and Optum/UnitedHealthcare plans. We also work with many out-of-network insurance providers and offer benefit verification to help you understand your options.
What insurance plans does Galen Hope accept for eating disorder and mental health treatment?
In-Network: Galen Hope is currently in-network with ComPsych, Multiplan, Aetna, First Health, and Optum/UnitedHealthcare plans. Through our Optum contract, we may also be able to work with commercial plans such as UHC, AvMed, and Oscar.
Out-of-Network: We also support many clients through out-of-network benefits with providers like Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), Cigna, Evernorth, and others. To determine how your specific plan may apply to treatment, please contact us for a complimentary insurance verification.
Can I use out-of-network insurance to pay for treatment at Galen Hope?
In some instances, we can accept out-of-network (OON) as full payment while in others, we provide a scaled partial payment. This may also be connected with your out or pocket max, as well as co-pays and co-insurance. The degree to which out of network benefits cover the full cost of treatment varies greatly from policy to policy. In some instances it can serve as full payment, while others may cover a portion. In all cases, individuals using out of network benefits will be subject to paying their out-of-network deductible and other fees such as the out of pocket max, co-insurance or co-pays as dictated by your insurance policy.
Does Galen Hope help verify insurance benefits for treatment?
Absolutely. We offer free insurance benefit verification to help you understand what your policy may cover before you begin treatment. We aim to provide full transparency around coverage and any potential out-of-pocket costs.
Can I get a Single Case Agreement (SCA) for treatment at Galen Hope?
When clinically indicated and appropriate, we pursue Single Case Agreements (SCAs) to help families access in-network-level coverage with an out-of-network provider. Our team advocates on your behalf and provides clinical documentation to support the request. We encourage you to call us so that we can determine if a SCA is warranted.
What happens if my insurance stops covering treatment early?
If your insurance coverage ends unexpectedly and we believe the denial of care is not in your best clinical interest, our team will work directly with your insurance carrier to appeal the decision. You will receive timely notification of any changes in authorizations for care in order to explore financial options and clinical recommendations to help minimize any disruption in care.
How can I find out what my insurance covers for eating disorder or mental health treatment?
Our admissions team will assess your insurance policy, the recommended level of care, and your treatment location to give you a clear understanding of what your plan is likely to cover. We’ll guide you every step of the way.
Are insurance benefits different depending on where I live?
Yes. Insurance coverage may vary by state and plan type. We consider your plan’s regional requirements when evaluating your benefits.
Will I know my treatment costs before starting at Galen Hope?
Yes. Before admission, we’ll walk you through all anticipated costs, including what insurance is likely to cover and any out-of-pocket expenses, so there are no surprises.
Can Galen Hope help me understand my insurance coverage?
Yes. Our experienced admissions team will break down your policy, explain your mental health or eating disorder benefits, and help you make the most informed decision possible.
